Shame on the Atlanta Police Department

Want to see your tax dollars at work? Want to see what cops are doing on a Saturday, rather than pulling over drunk drivers or, you know, fighting crime?

Check out this video from the Atlanta Anonymous protest. Riot squads for a group of kids with signs. Kids being arrested for 'violating noise ordinances'. Drivers being pulled over for honking in support.

*flips off Atlanta PD* Got a paid 'day off' huh boys? Got to play make believe storm trouper in your riot gear and ruin the week of innocent people. Jerks.

Note: In other cities, much larger protests were held. Other cities police forces commended Anons on local news for being so peaceful, ate caek, had a great time. This was the result of asshole 'police', not violent protesters. You should be ashamed of your behavior, Atlanta PD.

Edited 3-16-08 to add: They also had a helicopter circling overhead. A helicopter. The 'guy in charge' is Terrell Bolton (tdbolton@co.dekalb.ga.us). Please send him a nice letter (seriously, no lulz) if you feel moved. I sent an email that mirrored this post, plus a suggestion that he ask the mayor to pardon tickets given that day, and to apologize to the tax payers.

I'd say "wtf", but I'd be afraid that I might get arrested for disturbing the peace...

To be fair to Atlanta police, this is reportedly the DeKalb County police. This is the same county where the sheriff had the sheriff-elect gunned down in 2000. Scientology fits right in there.

Holy shit. Anyone with a modicum of knowledge about crowd control techniques can see that the cops really screwed the pooch on this one.

btw, here's some additional footage of the riot squad getting in formation. It's got some groovy "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" and Star Wars music.

I guess this is what Justice Scalia meant by "The New Professionalism".

The funny thing? They did this LAST month -- the riot squad thing, not the arresting thing -- when Anonymous pulled off its first protest.

I'm not sure how the general public of Atlanta will feel about specially-trained, highly-paid officers being called in to control/arrest a group of people who WEREN'T EVEN BREAKING THE LAW.

Ian-- Other cities have been great, including OKC. You can say 'wtf?' Just dont go to Atlanta and say 'wtf?'

Apo-- Ugh, thanks for the info. I emailed Terrell Bolton (tdbolton@co.dekalb.ga.us) a 'shame on you' email.

Mister DNA-- That video was from the Feb 10 protest. The riot sqauad was there, which was funny, but nothing like this happened. Atlanta PD *knew* that these protesters were harmless, yet March 15 they made the decision to behave inappropriately.

This incident really has me worked up-- I had nightmares last night that the PD turned firehoses on the kids. I was driving by leaped out of my car and was like 'What are you doing?? If one of those kids gets hurt or killed YOURE going to jail!' and they tried to arrest me for that, but I took a chainsaw to the hose first (hey, it was a dream ROFL!).

Im really angry.

Goddamn anon I missed your post as I was typing-- LOL Ya thats really pissing me off.

"Nononono! Dont go on a drug bust, guys, please. No, by all means, waste another Saturday babysitting some kids that you *KNOW* are peaceful and harassing motorists. THATS what we need our boys in blue for. Now, kindly fuck off. Thanks so much."

So good to see that DeKalb County is there to protect any institution of faith. (Here is a silly question, when did the term "people of faith" began?)

Apparently, Atlanta's police department weren't the only ones being complete assholes. Nice one, Chicago.

May I remind readers that DeKalb County,Georgia is where they placed evolution disclaimers on 38,000 textbooks and were ordered in Federal Court to remove them. They appealed to a higher court and asked that they be allowed to keep the stickers until their appeal was heard. The appeals court said no, take 'em off immediately. The stickers were glued on with some sort of super glue and it cost them about $20K to hire people with putty knives and super glue remover to get them off! Finally, they settled out of court, perhaps seeing they would lose the appeal. Another win for our side!

@ERV: Apo-- Ugh, thanks for the info. I emailed Terrell Bolton (tdbolton@co.dekalb.ga.us) a 'shame on you' email.

I'm sorry you had to get past all the cheesy music and radio speak and sirens to find that address.

Some more on "Anonymous" vs. Scientology.

It's worth remembering that $cientologys MO includes abusing the legal system, including and infiltrating government agencies.

L Ron himself routinely reported his enemies to the FBI as "communists" in the McCarthy era.

I fully support these protests, but anyone involved should be aware that they are playing with fire.

It's likely that the police reaction was based on Scientology influence, either from people within the force, or a concerted disinformation campaign on their part. Of course, the police over-reacting all by themselves is perfectly plausible too.

I suspect the difference between Feb 10th and March 15th is a lot of Scientology money. All they gotta do is bribe the head guy. Or send him an offer he can't refuse.

Doesn't surprise me that the Dekalb County cops are acting like this. They're notorious.

However, there is always the bad interview at protests and the guy at the end is the one here. They are protesting that their rights are being broken because Scientology doesn't let their members have free speech because they kick them out of the church?

ummmmm

Please stop referring them as Atlanta Plice. This is DEKALB COUNTY POLICE. Yes, there is a big difference.....

V. H.

That was Cobb County, GA.

You are not too smart despite your education. First, you vilify the wrong department and then you make the ridiculous assumption that the police have taken this action upon themselves.

Why not blame the politicians behind it? Or does this repulse your liberal bend? ~ Azrial
