Michael Behe = Sal Cordova... and you know what that means...

So Im in lab, scarfing down some food before I go infect some cells, and checked into Behes Amazon blog for some dessert.

Michael Behe has the intellectual honesty of Sal Cordova.

September 3, 2007: Cordova: Ms. Smith even conceded the following here about the NON-novelty of Vpu...

November 13, 2007: Behe: After sneering a bit at me, Smith began her post by asserting that vpu is a “new” gene (even though it is found in SIVcpz across several primate families, as her own citations show.)

AUGUST 2, 2007: Me: Vpu, is in fact, a new gene. Of the five major phylogenetic groups of SIV, Vpu is only found in one group-- Chimpanzee SIV (SIVcpz) and its descendants—including HIV-1. It is absent in all of the other major lineages (Sooty Mangabey, African Green Monkey, Sykes Monkey, and L'Hoest Monkey). This means that Vpu is in HIV-1 but not HIV-2.

Niiiiiiiiiice, Behe! More on how everything is 'pathetic'.

Im sorry, why, exactly, am I supposed to be 'civil' to this hack Creationist?

I notice that comments are disabled - on Michael Behe's 'blog'.

It seems to be a common feature of ID blogs and sites. Either that or dissenters are 'disappeared'.

Strange that.

Working out some hiv-y stuff, instead.

Good choice, Behe is following his script. I'm curious if he ever will get to the evolution of viroporin.

My layman's impression of Behe's latest is that he's not even trying to convince people who are in the science, but only playing to whatever laymen may be tricked into seeing him as a sciency kind of guy. He'll attempt any desperate trick to appear somehow equal to actual scientists, even when he knows the ruse won't work on scientists.

It's all about the Culture Wars for Crusader Behe. There are more laymen to win over than there are scientists (who are hardly going to be won over by his bluster, anyway). So Behe goes for the laymen. And he doesn't have to convince them, just keep them confused.

In doing this, Behe skips daintily about. He tries to avoid even accepting that "HIV-1 Vpu is a viroporin" is, as Musgrave pointed out, Abbie's "core argument." That's the pachyderm in the chamber that he refuses to make eye contact with.

More use of terms useful only for the hand waving away of evidence: "means little," "trivial," etc.

Behe writes:

"The fact that the Vpu-fusion proteins molecular weight shifts from 43,000 to 34,000 in SDS-PAGE is difficult to interpret. It may or may not mean anything significant about the protein’s native structure."

Well, if Behe is so ignorant that he's unsure, perhaps he ought to consult actual working scientists in the field.

Oh, wait, he is consulting them, isn't he? He's just not listening.

No, Behe's only goal now, even if he might have had higher hopes earlier, is to confuse the ignorant, not to convince scientists. But as a pious fraud, he can always console himself by knowing he's part of a long and hoary tradition. He's being very Biblical, you see:

"Will you speak falsely for God, and speak deceitfully for him? Will you show partiality toward him, will you plead the case for God?" -- Job 13:7-8 (NRSV)
