Not a sceptical question in any way, but what sources do virologists use for assaying HIV down the decades?

I think at this point, they (Betty Korber, at Los Alamos) worked out a computer program that takes into account the different mutation rates of each of the subtypes and gives them individual molecular clocks-- build a phylogenetic tree (off of the pol gene, I think?), trace back the molecular clocks, and BAM! Time-line!
Ill shoot knowledgeable fellow an email to see if he has time to give you a real answer :)
